Chapter 7: Digging Deeper

My students have been doing a nice job of responding to questions and focusing on the strategies. Where they have been struggling is explaining their thinking. I seem to see this across all subject areas as well. I liked the ideas about having a book club. While I don't have time for that in my regular day I was hoping that for next year I could maybe set up a bulletin board or piece of chart paper for them to write book recommendations. What I could use help with is ways to help them explain their thinking, and general questions to ellicit better responses.

My students are getting better about using the text to answer questions, but it seems that they think so literal. I wonder how ready they are to synthesize the information. What if I am going to fast?

I used this time to really talk about going back to prove your answers. Too many students don't go back and check when we test them for reading levels. I really stressed it when we talked about digging deeper.

My goal next year is to make smaller versions of our anchor charts for each strategy.
